Uncovering the meaning of "Machinery": An ART RESPONSE
The late National Artist and cubist painter Vicente Manansala’s 1962 oil painting “Machinery” was sold at over twice its estimated price in the 2007 Christie’s Southeast Asian Modern and Contemporary Art in Hong Kong. The painting was created at the peak of Manansala’s cubist maturity. He became more careful with manipulating this work, featuring a solid composition with patented lines, and forming melodious colors and forms. It shows different kinds of machinery ranging from medical equipment to manufacturing machines, you can also see one character striking a thinking pose with what looks like a mechanical arm. We can also see other humanoid machines doing what supposed to be labor jobs.
The entirety of the painting shows how we humans created such tremendous technological machineries that helped us advance through the ages which allowed us to create a lot of opportunities to explore and help other people who have unfortunate disabilities with our current capabilities, and also have a world where it is much easier and creates less stress for people to live.
With every individual's unique intelligence and crafty skills we managed to create technologies which made everything in life much less grinding process including my own. Every parents keep telling us that our generation is lucky to have such advanced technology and that we couldn't survive their time of life, which I strongly agree. I couldn't have imagine living in the past where everything that I had was not even on a person's mind. But a part of myself wants to try the kind of life where every work you placed your effort can feel so rewarding.
